You are viewing [info]cool_curtin09's journal

On Friday 22nd May 2009, saw all of us at NET11 finalised and submitted the Concepts Assignment.   I have chosen a different platform to publish the assignment, and if you are interested in what I have written then click on http://coolcurtin09crp.wordpress.com/.

General Discussion had 666 posts and one of our fellow sudents called it the Evil board Post!.

And I am glad to come back onboard studying onlines - make lots of friends, hopefully be able to continue the journey together with same group of friends from this subject (jointly and separately) and the only regret I will always have is the stress factor - getting the assignment completed/submitted on time, boost the participation level!

It was Monday night (25th May) that I asked my teenage daughter to check out my blog and her only comment is 'very boring, mum.'  Anyway, what does a teenager know about blogging nowadays?!  Could be more than I do - yikes!

And in the next SP, I am off to NET12 A Socio-Technological .......!

Information Ecologies

"We define an information ecology to be a system of people, practices, values and technologies in a particular local environment.  in information ecologies, the spotlight is not on technology, but on human activities that are served by technology."  (Nardi & O'Day, 1999)

Rafael Capurno, Towards an Information Ecology -  under towards a theory of infomation ecology : social dimension, linguistic dimenstion and historical dimensions.  under towards a pragmatics of information ecology : defines the concept of information pollution as a basic pragmatic concept of an information ecology being considered at two levels - within information rich societies and with regard to global interactions.

Information Ecologies by Felix Stalder - the following patterns are the four basic dimensions of an information ecology: interdependency; change; time-boundness; differentiation

with those readings in my mind, i will try to answer the following:
  • how might the metaphor of an 'ecology' impact on the way i think about, understand or use the internet?
the metaphor of an 'ecology' will not impact on the way i think about, understand or use the internet.  i still use the internet as currently is - where there is a internet connection - i will use it to get information; and if there is no internet connection - i will have to use the local libraries or bookstores.

  • how are the concepts 'information' and 'communication' understood within the framework of an 'information ecology'?
for Stalder - the 'communication' is the nodes and 'information' is the vast amounts of datas reduced according to the inner structure of the node to specific information
for Capurro - the 'inforfmation' is the knowledge and 'communication' is identified as how an interaction betwen different ways of  communication  can be organised

  • why don't we talk of a 'communication ecology'?
As indicated by Professor Allen in his concept number 15 'metaphors of use and communication differentiation', advanced users while recognising that metaphors continue to play an important role in generating popular awareness, are careful to realise that the internet is a unique phenomenon which could be analogous to other systems with its own peculiar dynamics, and need to imagine that it is similar.

Case Study: Peer-2-Peer
  • Decoding the P2P ecology would require a number of issues and aspects involved when thinking about the purpose and function of P2P.
  • P2P as software/technical network famously associated with Napster, and latterly Kazaa and others, there are many different (and non-music orientated) forms of P2P software.
  • Piracy is good? for a critical approach to 'illegality' of P2P, take a look at the great links by theorist Mark Pesce on BitTorrent:
Piracy is Good? How Battlestar Galactica killed broadcast TV. Part One: Hyperdistribution.

Piracy is Good? Part Two: The new laws of Television

Piracy is Good? live presentation of "Piracy Is Good?", delivered by Mark Pesce on May 6th, 2005 at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney - download using BitTorrent

The utube version -part one - the links on the page will lead to all other parts

Information transfer, community, legal issues: copyright; socio-political considerations are also elements of the P2P ecology.

Preparing for future shock

2 significant initiatives predicted to change the way we organise and use the internet are Internet2 and PlanetLab.

PlanetLab is a global research network that supports the development of new network services. Since the beginning of 2003, more than 1,000 researchers at top academic institutions and industrial research labs have used PlanetLab to develop new technologies for distributed storage, network mapping, peer-to-peer systems, distributed hash tables, and query processing. PlanetLab currently consists of 1038 nodes at 495 sites. (http://www.planet-lab.org/)

Internet2 is the foremost U.S. advanced networking consortium. Led by the research and education community since 1996, Internet2 promotes the missions of its over 300 members by providing both leading-edge network capabilities and unique partnership opportunities that together facilitate the development, deployment and use of revolutionary Internet technologies. The timeline on this page provides some highlights from the first ten years of our collective history, and will evolve as Internet2 members continue to transform the way we work, learn, and communicate. (http://www.internet2.edu/about/timeline/)

so what do i think of some of the developments expected to impact on our use of the net? what are the possibilities?

With ever and fast changing growth, it is very hard for me to put my pulse on the impact that some of the developments expected on our use of the net.

With that in mind, Connect Australia is an initiative by the Australian Government in  2005 to provide communications package for regional access to telecommunications services.
Connect Australia will rollout improved broadband to people living in regional, rural and remote areas, extend mobile phone coverage, build new regional communications networks and set up vital telecommunications services for remote Indigenous communities.

Evaluating the web

Evaluating the Web: in my own words, write an annotation for the source which could communicate to a reader both your judgment of the site according to what i have learnt from the tutorial and also the following info: the reliability and authority of the site/source/article; the main ideas or subjects discussed in the article; the purpose for which site was written. record my annotation in my learning log.

I have chosen this one as the best 'source'

My annotation: This one webpage produced by the UK Berkeley - Teaching Library Internet Workshops - provides an easy to read explanation about the Deep Web. Lot of useful links inside this html document for further information of "Deep Web" or Invisible Web.

compare my final analysis and annotation with the material i saved for the last task and think about these questions :
in terms of my own future use, which 'body' of information (ie the original 'snapshot' of the site, or my own annotated, analytical version) would be most useful to refer back to? in term of external users (ie if i included this site as a hyperlink or resouce on a website) which body of info would best help them judge if the site was useful or of interest to them? record my reflections in my learning log.

For my own future use, it will be my own annotated, analytical version being the most useful to refer back to as I had conducted the analysis with an understanding of the source document. The analysis conducted includes the reliability and authority of the site/source/article, the main ideas discussed in the artcile, and the purpose for which the site was written.

For external users, I would merge both together to provide more indepth details.

tools using web : searching web

Tools for using the web: [concept 28 - paradox of www (Allen, n.d)] - Which programs I downloaded and note which (if any) facets I think might prove useful -

adobe's pdf reader - version 7.
flash/shockwave players - required for the use of Open Universities website
media players - already installed by default
search manager/combiners - Copernic Agent Basic is free while personal and professional are at US$29.95 and $79.95 respectively
bookmark manager - Bookmark Buddy - download with fully working version and try it for free for 30 days.
offline browser/copier - Webcopier can be downloaded for free 15-day trial and if you like it, cost US$30.00 (free upgrade for 12 months) or US$40.00 (free lifetime upgrades). PageSucker distributed as shareware - demo version for free; full version US$10.00 for a single user licence and site licence US$300.

My downloaded choice - Webcopier (offline browser) and Copernic (search manager). Any facets that I think prove to be useful? Copernic Agent Basic - be able to select different type of search engine. The Webcopier - uh, have not much success to get it working.

Searching the Web: [concept 32 - virtually a library? (Allen, n.d)] Using Web Search Tools and Specialised Databases -

  • using Windows Live Search "DEEP WEB" - the first hit " Deep Web - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia " and number of hits "204,000,000 results"
  • using copernicus, the first hit "Deep Web Technologies" and number of hits "12 results"

printscreen of Copernic's customise search engines

  • what differences did i notice? why? which search, on first glance gave me the most promising results?
    • the number of hits are reduced significantly due to the limited selection of search engines. Copernic Agent has defaulted three search engines in its customisation (copernic - metasearch tool , enhance interactive - family friendly search engine, mamma.com - metasearch engine) and I chose Fast Search (AlltheWeb.com).
    • Copernic Agent on first glance gave me the most promising results.
  • save at least the first 5 hits of both searches.
    • by saving the hits prompted the creation of personal virtual library.

boolean searching task : after reading the tutorial, taking the same key words of my last search, think about how i would best search for the following:

  • the biggest number of hits relating to these key words : deep web or web theory = 8,680,000 results; "deep web" = 318,000,000 results
  • info most relevant to what i ACTUALLY wanted to look for! : the first 10 hits
  • info coming only from university sources : deep web or web theory site:.edu = 698,000 results

discuss my strategies with the class and record the exact search terms I used - have not used the boolean much in all my internet search. my strategy has always been typing the keywords.

organising search information task: choose the best 3 sources found in the previous task and using whatever software or tool i think appropriate, record the following info about site: URL; author; institution; blurb/summary/screen shot.

detail how i saved the information, what software i used and why? : Open up the link, save to the folder using the web browser functionality - Add Favorites. And if it is an pdf file, then the file will be saved to the appropriate folder on the hard drive. The reason being that the information generated from the search engines can be easily retrieved without re-run the search.

Newsgroup...Joined Alternative Medicine

Follow your chosen newsgroup for a couple of days, and then post a message to the group. You should be able to see that message shortly thereafter. Now cut and paste a copy of the entire message, including the header information.

  • Record the message in your learning log

Please Note: make sure that the message you post to the news group is related to that group. I.e. don't post a message saying 'test' or 'posting message for the purposes of study' etc. Keep in mind the rules of Netiquette.

Joined the Alternative Medicine Group in Yahoo.  Posted a new topic "Mouth Ulcer" today (May 3, 2009).  But the message will be reviewed by the moderator before it is posted to the members.  Will check later and see if it is up.

The latest topic posted is the Swine Flu event asking if there is an alternative medicine that can be used.

HTML tags:  This task took me back to a couple of years ago on one of the subjects I studied for my degree.  So in a way, I did not encountered any difficulties with these exercises.  These exercises acted as refreshers for me.  My thoughts about html - well, let's see - I do feel a sense of achievement as I am capable to produce my own web page again. The differences between html and blogging can be anything from the ready-use blogging platforms,  posting an entry can be written in rich text or html, and choosing the webpage layout.

Print screen of my web page:

WWW Standards:

Optional Task - My summary of what I believe are the 5 most important 'rules' for writing online as follows: (is the advice in Nielsen's paper - written in 1997 - still current?) :

  • credibility
  • usability
  • inverted pyramid style
  • concised text
  • scannable
  • objective
As indicated by Nielsen's paper, I am one of those web users who scanned all newsletters that come into the inbox and never read them unless there is eye-catching item.

Optional Task 2 -  Testing my web page according to W3C Standards.  At first testing, the validation code indicated that the color name is unidentifiable.  Since I had that removed and re-tested, the web page passed the validation.  The problem identified can be related to display as the incorrectly color name selection.

Print screen of my validation:

  • Legal issues: Drawing on the sources from Copyright Website and Curtin's policy documents related to copyright and IP in IT use:  have i used images or words on my web page or website that contravene copyright laws? everytime i use an image or words on my web page, i could have contravene the copyright laws unless an acknowledgement of the image or words where they came from be referenced.

  • would i be in breach of copyright if i put the Curtin logo at the top of my web page for an assignment? to answer this question depends on Curtin's IT policy. This document titled "Copyright Policy and Procedures" with its commencement date of 1 November 2005 has the purpose to "ensure that the University adheres to Australian legislative requirements relating to the copying, communication or performance of copyright material; and that Curtin staff and students are in a position to make legitimate use of such copyright material to assist their study, research or teaching activities." yes i would be in breach unless i ask permission from Curtin.
ftp: Uploading my web page to my student web space in OASIS takes the installation of Core FTP LE as Firezilla fails to work. After installing the Core FTP , following the instructions provided by Curtin website, the webpage is successfully uploaded to the web space.   My URL is http://student.curtin.edu.au/~14439779 - it only works if you have VPN installed for Curtin University.

Blogs: Reflect upon what I have read about blogs.  Various uses for blogs such as citizen journalism and personal blogging.  Have I seen in my net travels any interesting uses for blogs?

I came across the other day when I was searching for information at home - trying to figure out or grasp the understanding of how to export Primavera schedule to Microsoft Project.  This particular person uses his blog to advertise the training schedules for all his offered courses.  Check out this link how to export primavera schedule to microsoft project.

Web 2.0: Comparing Internet Communications furl list to a html version, think about the format and usability of a website/html written list with this same information.

What is the difference between these two?
There is no formatting style in html version as it is just plain text.

What are the benefits?
html : easy to update, easy to move the individual list to up or down.
website : attractive, easy navigation, more eye-catching with the graphics/images

Which format do I think I would like better and why?
the website as it is pleasing to the eyes and easy navigation.

Chat task - ICQ

Individual task: arrange with another student in the unit to meet up for a chat record observations from this chat.  have to think about and reflect upon what i enjoyed or didn't.  i enjoy about that chat method and what problems or benefits i think that method offers for internet communications.

in this individual task, i chose yahoo messenger (previously i used msn) for this subject.  each and every one of us in NET11 provided their email addresses so that we can add their contacts details into our chosen messenger.  before a party of two can chat, one must invite the other with the other accepting the invitation.  i managed to chat only 2 so far in yahoo messenger.

enjoyable: be able to chat without hearing each other voice; can type as fast as you can without any spelling mistake; if you make a mistake in the sentence, you can delete it before hitting the 'send' button.

frustration:  have to wait for them to be online; the hesitation to send a message to the other party if he/she wants to chat; unsure what the next question will be.

problems: have to stay connected online before a friend is online; emotions can be deceiving; grammar errors with lots of acronyms.

benefits:  it is instanteous; have a quick chat; do not have to hold the phone to your ear for long hours; no expensive phone bills.

Group task:  Organsed on the discussion board to have a group chat with anyone using the ICQ option.  A few students took up the offer.  We had chats lasted from 30 mins to an hour.  Talked about everything under the moon.   The ICQ like others chat method provides an instantaneous communication.  ICQ allocates a number to identify each member instead of using email addresses.  Last Sunday (29th March 2009), we ended with 5 members in ICQ.  Andrew took the lead to post a summary of what transpired - Sunday Night Group Chat or you can check this at his blog too http://mynet112009.wordpress.com/module-2/group-chat-report/

Some of us disliked the ICQ and would revert back to their favourites messenger. I signed up with ICQ 1995 (i think) but none of my family members had computers then.  The chance of chatting with them was nil. ICQ 's appearance has definitely evolved to a modern touch.
